BattleTech ilClan Era Reading Order

The ilClan era begins in 3151 when Clan Wolf, led by Khan Alaric Ward, conquers Terra and declares itself the ilClan. This is the current BattleTech timeline, and it is where all new fiction releases are set. If you are following BattleTech novels as they come out, you are reading ilClan-era fiction.

I have been writing BattleTech fiction for more than twenty years. Three of my novels and one collection are set in the ilClan era: Blood Will Tell, Redemption Rites, Gray Death Rising, and The Price of Duty. I also edited Shrapnel magazine through much of the era’s fiction output. This is the complete reading order.

The ilClan era reading order is simpler than the Clan Invasion or Succession Wars sequences because the novels were published over a shorter span and the storylines are still being written. There is no thirty-year backlog to sort through. Start with Hour of the Wolf and read forward. For a ranked list of the best Dark Age and ilClan novels rather than a chronological sequence, that page covers the strongest entries. The list below covers every major ilClan novel published through early 2026.

The ilClan era starts here. Clan Wolf takes Terra.

For the broader timeline that puts these novels in context, see the BattleTech reading order. For the full catalog across all eras, see the list of BattleTech novels. For the Dark Age novels that lead into this era, see MechWarrior and Dark Age books in order.

Story Threads in the ilClan Era

The ilClan novels run along several parallel story threads. You can follow them in publication order (the table above) or pick the thread that interests you most.

The Clan political thread begins with Hour of the Wolf and Children of Kerensky (Pardoe), then continues with A Question of Survival, Honor’s Gauntlet, and Without Question (Young). This is the arc about what happens to the Clans after one of them wins the grand prize. Bryan Young’s entries in this thread are some of the strongest recent BattleTech fiction.

The Clan Hell’s Horses and Lyran thread follows Craig A. Reed’s Elements of Treason series. Duty (2022) covers the Twenty-Sixth Arcturan Guards rebuilding Arcturus after the Jade Falcons abandon it. Opportunity (2022) follows Duke Vedet Brewer to Melissia, where he sees a chance to build a new power base on the Lyran fringe. Honor (2023) covers Clan Hell’s Horses during the race for Terra as Star Captain Peter Cobb pushes for a new strategic direction. The series shares a setting and era but follows different characters on different worlds.

The Northwind Highlanders thread runs through Michael J. Ciaravella’s Highlander Covenant series: Grey Watch Protocol, Paid in Blood, and the Highlander Covenant omnibus. Post-ilClan Northwind with a focus on identity and resistance.

The mercenary thread includes my own Redemption Rites (Wolf’s Dragoons), Gray Death Rising (the new Gray Death Legion), Bryan Young’s Let Slip the Dogs of War, and Pardoe’s Divided We Fall (Alaric Wolf’s attempt to bring the Dragoons back into the Clan fold). If you are a mercenary fiction reader first and a Clan politics reader second, start here.

The Capellan thread runs through my Blood Will Tell (set just before the ilClan Trial) and Tom Leveen’s Blood Will Rise (set after). These two novels bracket the ilClan era from House Liao’s perspective.

The Clan Sea Fox thread follows Jason Hansa’s A Skulk of Foxes and Bryan Young’s Voidbreaker, covering Sea Fox intelligence operations and the HPG Blackout.

Do I Need to Read Anything Before the ilClan Novels?

Hour of the Wolf provides enough context to follow the story on its own. You do not need to have read the Clan Invasion or Dark Age novels to understand what happens on Terra in 3151.

That said, the emotional weight of the ilClan Trial lands harder if you have read the Blood of Kerensky trilogy first. Understanding what the original Clan Invasion meant (and what it cost) makes the moment when a Clan finally takes Terra resonate differently. For the Blood of Kerensky reading path, see my Blood of Kerensky Trilogy guide. For a broader understanding of what the Clans are and where they came from, see BattleTech Clans explained.

The Dark Age novels (30 books published 2002 to 2008) cover the Republic of the Sphere era that precedes the ilClan. They are not required reading, but readers who want the full bridge between the classic BattleTech timeline and the ilClan should start with Ghost War by Michael A. Stackpole and work forward. I cover the full sequence in MechWarrior and Dark Age books in order.

What is the first ilClan era BattleTech novel?

Hour of the Wolf by Blaine Lee Pardoe, published in 2020, is the first ilClan era novel. It covers Clan Wolf’s conquest of Terra and the establishment of the ilClan.

How many ilClan era BattleTech novels are there?

As of early 2026, there are approximately 20 ilClan era novels and collections published by Catalyst Game Labs. The number continues to grow as new titles release regularly.

Do I need to read the Clan Invasion novels before the ilClan books?

No. Hour of the Wolf works as a standalone entry point. The Blood of Kerensky trilogy adds emotional context but is not required. Each ilClan novel provides enough background to follow its story.

What happened in the ilClan Trial in BattleTech?

In 3151, Clan Wolf under Khan Alaric Ward conquered Terra and defeated Clan Jade Falcon in the ilClan Trial, establishing Clan Wolf as the ilClan, the supreme authority over all Clans. The Republic of the Sphere was destroyed in the process.
