What Happened to Clan Smoke Jaguar?

Clan Smoke Jaguar was destroyed.

Cover of Forever Faithful by Blaine Lee Pardoe, the BattleTech novel covering the founding of the Fidelis after Clan Smoke Jaguar's destruction
Pardoe’s novel covers the Smoke Jaguar survivors’ transformation into the Fidelis. 4.8 stars from 436 reviews.

The Second Star League targeted the Jaguars for annihilation in 3059, drove them from every world they held in the Inner Sphere through Operation BULLDOG, and then struck their homeworld of Huntress through Task Force Serpent. Khan Lincoln Osis died fighting Victor Steiner-Davion during the Great Refusal on Strana Mechty in 3060, and with his death, Clan Smoke Jaguar ceased to exist as a functioning Clan. It was the first and only Clan ever destroyed by Inner Sphere forces.

The story did not end there. Survivors regrouped under the leadership of Star Colonel Paul Moon on the remote world of Wayside V, where they reinvented themselves as the Fidelis, a secret fighting force that served Devlin Stone and the Republic of the Sphere for decades. In 3151, after helping Clan Wolf conquer Terra, the Fidelis were permitted to reconstitute Clan Smoke Jaguar as a nonvoting Clan bound to ilKhan Alaric Ward.

I have written BattleTech fiction set across the Clan Invasion, the Jihad, and the ilClan era. The Smoke Jaguar story is one of the most dramatic arcs in the franchise: a powerful Clan brought down by its own brutality, then reborn through a long act of penance. This page covers the full timeline, from the invasion through the reconstitution.

Why Was Clan Smoke Jaguar Targeted?

The Inner Sphere chose Clan Smoke Jaguar because the Jaguars had earned the most enemies with the fewest allies. Their conduct during the Clan Invasion was brutal even by Clan standards. On Turtle Bay in the Draconis Combine, Smoke Jaguar forces used orbital bombardment to destroy an entire city after an uprising, killing hundreds of thousands of civilians. That atrocity became the defining image of the Jaguars in Inner Sphere media and politics.

The other Clans made the decision easier. Clan Smoke Jaguar was politically isolated within the Grand Council. The Jaguars had no strong allies among the other invading Clans, and their aggressive behavior had alienated potential supporters. When the Second Star League formed in 3058 and decided to send a message by destroying one Clan entirely, the Smoke Jaguars were the obvious choice: militarily weakened after Tukayyid, diplomatically isolated, and universally despised by the Inner Sphere populations they had conquered.

The decision was also strategic. Destroying a Clan that no other Clan would defend minimized the risk of the other invading Clans intervening. Clan Wolf, Clan Ghost Bear, and Clan Jade Falcon all stood aside while the Inner Sphere dismantled the Jaguars. The BattleTech Clan Invasion guide covers the full invasion timeline, and the reasons the Clans invaded trace the political maneuvering that launched Operation REVIVAL.

Operation BULLDOG: Driving the Jaguars from the Inner Sphere

Operation BULLDOG was the Second Star League’s campaign to expel Clan Smoke Jaguar from every world in their Inner Sphere Occupation Zone. The operation launched on 20 May 3059, under the overall command of Prince Victor Steiner-Davion and Precentor Martial Anastasius Focht.

The campaign moved fast. The SLDF fielded forces from every major Inner Sphere nation, supplemented by Clan Nova Cat, which had secretly defected to the Inner Sphere side. The combined force struck thirty-two worlds in the Smoke Jaguar Occupation Zone in the first two waves. The Jaguars, already weakened by losses at Tukayyid and years of guerrilla resistance from occupied populations, could not hold.

Khan Lincoln Osis ordered all Jaguar forces to retreat to Huntress in August 3059, intending to consolidate and rebuild on their homeworld. That retreat played directly into the Star League’s second operation: Task Force Serpent.

Task Force Serpent: The Strike on Huntress

Task Force Serpent was the secret half of the campaign. While Operation BULLDOG drove the Jaguars from the Inner Sphere, Task Force Serpent traveled the Exodus Road to the Clan Homeworlds with a single objective: reach Huntress and destroy the Smoke Jaguars’ ability to make war.

The task force was conceived by Marshal Morgan Hasek-Davion and approved by the First Whitting Conference in November 3058. The force consisted of roughly ten regiments, including the Eridani Light Horse, the First Kathil Uhlans, the Northwind Highlanders’ MacLeod’s Regiment, Com Guard units, and contingents from several Great Houses. Hasek-Davion commanded the force until his assassination en route. General Ariana Winston of the Eridani Light Horse succeeded him.

Task Force Serpent arrived at Huntress in March 3060. The initial assault succeeded in neutralizing the Smoke Jaguars’ orbital defenses and establishing a beachhead, but the fighting on the ground was savage. The Jaguars defending Huntress fought with the ferocity their Clan was known for. General Winston was killed in combat during the battle. The task force suffered an eighty percent casualty rate before reinforcements from Operation BULLDOG arrived in April 3060.

With the arrival of BULLDOG forces, the combined SLDF overwhelmed the remaining Jaguar defenders. Galaxy Commander Hang Mehta, who had led the Jaguar retreat from the Inner Sphere, committed suicide rather than be captured. The warrior caste of Clan Smoke Jaguar was virtually annihilated.

The Great Refusal and Lincoln Osis’s Death

The final act took place not on Huntress but on Strana Mechty, the political capital of all the Clans. Victor Steiner-Davion traveled to Strana Mechty and challenged the Clans collectively. He proposed a Trial: if the Inner Sphere won, the Clans would formally end the invasion. The Grand Council accepted, and each side fielded champions for a series of duels known as the Great Refusal.

In the final duel, Victor Steiner-Davion faced Khan Lincoln Osis of Clan Smoke Jaguar. Osis fought in a Dire Wolf, the heaviest OmniMech in the Clan arsenal. Victor defeated him. With Osis dead, Clan Smoke Jaguar had no leadership, no territory, no military, and no allies. The Clan was formally declared Annihilated. The BattleTech Clan Invasion timeline covers the full invasion era including the Great Refusal.

The Fidelis: Survival in Secret

Clan Smoke Jaguar’s story should have ended at the Great Refusal. It did not.

Star Colonel Paul Moon, a Jaguar officer who had fought during the invasion and on Huntress, survived the Annihilation. With help from Trent, a former Smoke Jaguar warrior who had defected to the Inner Sphere and later become a Nova Cat, Moon organized the evacuation of roughly three thousand surviving Jaguars (warriors and civilians) to the remote world of Wayside V.

On Wayside V, Moon reorganized the survivors into a new entity called the Fidelis (Latin for “faithful”). The Fidelis abandoned the Smoke Jaguar name and Clan structure, instead operating as a covert military force. During the Word of Blake Jihad, the Fidelis allied with Devlin Stone’s coalition and fought as his secret special forces unit, known informally as “Stone’s Shadows.” Their effectiveness during the Jihad earned them a place in Stone’s Republic of the Sphere, where they served as a hidden reserve force for decades.

The Fidelis operated under a debt of honor: Paul Moon believed his Clan had earned its destruction through its own brutality, and that the survivors owed a debt to the Inner Sphere that could only be paid through service. The Fidelis fought during the Dark Age, were activated after Fortress Republic was established, and conducted black operations across the Inner Sphere on Stone’s behalf.

Reconstitution: Clan Smoke Jaguar Reborn

Relations between the Fidelis and the Republic of the Sphere soured in 3149. Paul Moon broke with the Republic and approached Khan Alaric Ward of Clan Wolf with a proposal: the Fidelis would help Clan Wolf conquer Terra and defeat Clan Jade Falcon, and in return, Alaric would permit the resurrection of Clan Smoke Jaguar.

Alaric accepted. The Fidelis provided intelligence during the Battle of Terra in 3151 and supported Clan Wolf’s campaign. After Clan Wolf’s victory in the ilClan Trial, Alaric kept his word. Clan Smoke Jaguar was formally reconstituted as a nonvoting Clan bound to the ilKhan. Prohaska Moon, a blood descendant of Paul Moon, was elected Khan of the reborn Clan through a Trial of Position.

The reconstituted Smoke Jaguars are a different entity than the original Clan. They are small, lack an established merchant caste, and serve as a special operations force tied to the ilClan’s authority. Their usage of sabotage, espionage, and assassination during early operations for the Star League raised eyebrows among other Clans, echoing the Fidelis tactics rather than traditional Clan warfare. Whether the reborn Smoke Jaguars can escape the shadow of their predecessors remains one of the open questions of the ilClan era.

The Clan power ranking covers where all surviving Clans stand in the current era, and the BattleTech Clans explained reference covers all twenty original Clans.

Novels About Clan Smoke Jaguar

The Smoke Jaguar story is covered across several novels spanning different eras.

The invasion from the Inner Sphere side: Michael A. Stackpole’s Blood of Kerensky trilogy (Lethal Heritage, Blood Legacy, Lost Destiny) covers the full Clan Invasion including the Jaguars’ role and culminates at Tukayyid. The trilogy is the foundational text for the Clan Invasion era, and I cover it in detail on the Blood of Kerensky trilogy guide.

The Jaguar perspective: Blaine Lee Pardoe’s Exodus Road follows a Clan warrior during the invasion itself. While the protagonist is Ghost Bear, the novel provides ground-level context for the invasion that shaped the Jaguars’ fate.

Operations BULLDOG and SERPENT: Thomas S. Gressman’s Sword and Fire and The Hunters cover the Inner Sphere’s counterattack against Clan Smoke Jaguar. These are the essential novels for Operation BULLDOG and the ground campaign on Huntress.

The Fidelis and reconstitution: Blaine Lee Pardoe’s Forever Faithful covers the immediate aftermath of the Annihilation, the founding of the Fidelis, and the early years of Paul Moon’s leadership. For the ilClan era and the Battle of Terra that led to the Jaguars’ reconstitution, Blaine Lee Pardoe’s Hour of the Wolf covers Clan Wolf’s conquest of Terra.

The complete BattleTech reading order covers every era from the Succession Wars through the ilClan period.

Was Clan Smoke Jaguar destroyed?

Yes. Clan Smoke Jaguar was Annihilated in 3059 to 3060 by the Second Star League through Operation BULLDOG (which drove the Jaguars from the Inner Sphere) and Task Force Serpent (which struck their homeworld of Huntress). Khan Lincoln Osis was killed during the Great Refusal on Strana Mechty. The Clan was reconstituted in 3151 as a nonvoting Clan bound to the ilKhan.

What was the Fidelis in BattleTech?

The Fidelis was a secret military force composed of Clan Smoke Jaguar survivors, organized by Star Colonel Paul Moon on the world of Wayside V after the Clan’s destruction. The Fidelis served Devlin Stone and the Republic of the Sphere as covert special forces for decades before breaking with the Republic in 3149 and joining Clan Wolf.

Why was Clan Smoke Jaguar chosen for destruction?

The Second Star League chose Clan Smoke Jaguar because the Jaguars were politically isolated, militarily weakened after Tukayyid, and had committed the worst atrocities of the invasion, including the orbital bombardment of Turtle Bay. No other Clan would defend them, minimizing the risk of wider Clan intervention.

Is Clan Smoke Jaguar still active in BattleTech?

Yes, as of the ilClan era (3151 onward). Clan Smoke Jaguar was reconstituted from the Fidelis after Clan Wolf’s victory on Terra. The reborn Clan is a small, nonvoting entity bound to ilKhan Alaric Ward, serving as a special operations force for the Star League.

What novels cover the destruction of Clan Smoke Jaguar?

Thomas S. Gressman’s Sword and Fire and The Hunters cover Operations BULLDOG and SERPENT. Blaine Lee Pardoe’s Forever Faithful covers the aftermath and the founding of the Fidelis. Michael A. Stackpole’s Blood of Kerensky trilogy covers the Clan Invasion that set the stage for the Jaguars’ destruction.
